Buffs fall in first round of NCAA Tournament

The No. 10-seed Colorado Buffaloes (22-12) fell to the No. 7-seed Illinois Fighting Illini (22-11) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, 66-57, ending their season.Colorado stayed within striking distance, but Illinois matched each score, preventing much momentum from building. Colorado led for parts of the first quarter, but didn’t after that frame, lacking an extra offensive gear.Even though Illinois was out-rebounded, it had more second-chance points than the Buffs, an area t...

Too Close to Close It Out: The Buffs’ late-game management

This season, the Colorado Buffaloes have had five games decided by one possession and nine where the score was within six points. CU has won just three of them. In four of those games, the Buffs had the ball with under five seconds with a chance to tie or win the game, but they’re only 2-2 in those games. Head coach JR Payne has rolled out similar lineups in each instance, with Masogayo seeing the court in all four contests. The Buffs have leaned on her length and ability to draw contact in late...

Long distance connection: Perfect link from Aurora to Vietnam - Sentinel Colorado

AURORA | By the time the little airplane icon on the Boeing 789 screen was blinking above the Bering Strait, I didn’t know what I was going to discover when we landed.

For as long as I can remember, walking in Vietnam was a matter of when not if. So when I landed in Hanoi 48 minutes past midnight in December, I wasn’t sure how to feel.

Does the Big 12’s new court offer a competitive advantage for teams without a bye?

In a press release, the Big 12 noted that the floor had been “vetted at the highest levels,” citing its use in the 2024 NBA All-Star Game, as well as in EuroLeague professional games. It said that the court will “[enable] real-time branding, in-game activations, and data-driven visuals that seamlessly adapt across basketball and other sports without compromising performance, durability, or student-athlete safety.”On Wednesday, the 3-point and half-court lines were black, difficult to see on the...

Do the Math: Big 12 tournament seeding scenarios

The Big 12 provides once again. A chaotic year that saw its fair share of parity could have as many as nine of its 16 teams finish with double-digit wins in the conference. With the Big 12 Tournament less than a week away and only eight conference games left to be played this weekend, how the tournament shapes up could help Colorado boost their resume or keep it on the outside looking in.Making things simple, TCU is the one seed, no matter how the TCU vs. Baylor game shakes up. If both Baylor an...

Colorado volleyball looks to NCAA Tournament

The last time the Colorado Buffaloes made the NCAA Tournament, Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” was the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100. Three years later, the No. 24 Buffaloes return to the dance with aspirations of breaking an eight-year tournament-win drought.
That last tournament win came in a sweep of No. 12 Baylor during the second round of the 2017 playoffs. The Buffaloes have been to the tournament twice since, once in 2018 and again in 2022, both times falling in the first round.

Buffs’ record-breaking season ends in Sweet 16

“The further you go, the more it hurts,” head coach Danny Sanchez said.
The No. 12-ranked Colorado Buffaloes (17-4-3) fell to the No. 9 Spartans (15-3-6) 2-1 in the Sweet 16.
Michigan State drew first blood just 46 seconds into the NCAA Tournament match when an unmarked junior Bella Najera put a strong stroke on the ball from inside the 18-yard box, putting the Buffs in an early 1-0 hole.
After surviving the storm, the Buffs, seemingly unfazed by the first minute goal, began to chip away at the...

Nytes provides backdrop as No. 12 Colorado downs No. 22 Xavier

As Jordan Nytes fell on the ball for the twelfth time in the No. 12 Colorado Buffaloes (17-3-3) 4-1 win over the No. 22 Xavier Musketeers (16-4-2), it wasn’t the number of saves that went through her head – it was the team in front of her.
“I can’t take any of the credit for the saves without the four people in front of me and the rest of the team,” Nytes said.
Nytes’ 12 saves on 13 shots provided the necessary backstop to Colorado’s high-powered offense in the second round of the NCAA Tournamen...

Buffs fight past Utah Valley in double overtime to advance in NCAA

Hope Leyba’s hands must be on her face—at least according to the officials in Colorado’s matchup against Utah Valley. In the first half, an attempted clearance from Utah Valley goalkeeper Leah Wolf ricocheted off Leyba’s face and into the net, only to be waved off for a phantom handball as the Buffs pressed for an equalizer. They would eventually find that equalizer and more, as the Colorado Buffaloes (16-3-3) defeated the Utah Valley Wolverines (14-4-3) 2–1 in extra time in the opening round of...

Colorado men’s basketball looks up after prior last place Big 12 finish

Two years removed from their thrilling buzzer-beating win over No. 7 Florida in the NCAA Tournament, the Colorado Buffaloes return only one player from that roster: Bangot Dak.
Last year, Dak averaged 8.2 points per game along with 3.9 rebounds. The Buffs, as a team, finished at the bottom of the Big 12, going 3–17 in conference play and 14–21 overall.
Returners-
With only five returning players from last year, head coach Tad Boyle will rely on new faces to step up while leaning on Dak, Sebastia...

Colorado women’s soccer poised for deep NCAA Tournament run

The No. 12 ranked Colorado women’s soccer team (15-3-3) will make an NCAA Tournament appearance for the third consecutive year. Colorado has earned the No. 3 seed and will host Utah Valley University (14-4-3) on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. MT at Prentup Field.
Colorado’s deepest playoff runs came in 2006 and 2013, when the Buffs fell to regional No. 1 seeds Notre Dame (2006) and Florida State (2013) during the third rounds. Both Notre Dame and Florida State were the National Runner-Ups in each of...
